Creating safe, inclusive, and empowering environments for LGBTQI+ young people.
Starting the Journey
About Proud Spaces
Proud Spaces is an Irish-developed, evidence-based model of youth work that creates safe, inclusive, and empowering environments for young LGBTQI+ people. It is rooted in the core values and principles of youth work and supports young people to explore their identity, build connections, and thrive.
Proud Spaces is a key part of Youth Work Ireland’s Youth Work for All campaign, which calls for inclusive, well-funded youth work to be available to every young person, in every community, no matter who they are or where they live.
What's in this module?
This module is designed as a foundation for anyone working with, or supporting young LGBTQI+ people. Whether you are new to LGBTQI+ concepts or looking to refresh and strengthen your knowledge, this learning space aims to build confidence, clarity, and shared understanding.
Throughout this module, you will be introduced to key terms and concepts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics. This learning is not about “getting it perfect.” It’s about building understanding, being open to learning, and committing to practice that supports the wellbeing and dignity of young LGBTQI+ people.
Take your time with the content, reflect on your own assumptions, and use the quizzes and scenarios as opportunities to connect learning to real-life youth work contexts.
By the end of this module, you will have a stronger foundation to use inclusive language with confidence and to contribute to safer, braver, and prouder spaces for young people.
For further learning, we have two more courses in this area, these are both-half day, in person workshops that are run multiple times a year throughout the country. To register your interest in doing the next course email proudspaces@youthworkireland.ie
